For years, New York Fashion Week has been framed as the commercial, retail-driven sibling of Paris and Milan — the city that sells fashion rather than dreams it. The September 2026 calendar suggests that framing is being deliberately rewritten. The Spring/Summer 2027 season is shaping up as a reboot season: heritage American houses are getting fresh creative leadership, the week is going fur-free for the first time, and a new group of names is converging on New York from London, Warsaw and Kolkata.

The CFDA has released the preliminary schedule for the week, which runs Thursday, September 10 through Tuesday, September 15, with roughly 70 runway shows and presentations, plus a pre-week day on September 9 led by names like Ralph Lauren and Coach. The clearest sign of the reset sits at the very top of the calendar: Diane von Furstenberg, which opens the official schedule on September 10.

That opening is the season’s emblem. Henry Zankov, named artistic director in May, is the first person to hold that title in DVF’s 54-year history, and his debut marks the house’s first runway show in a decade. Zankov worked at DVF from 2014 to 2018 and won the 2024 CFDA American Emerging Designer of the Year award, and he continues to run his own label, Zankov. He is not alone. Calvin Klein Collection continues its closely watched creative revival on September 11, while Tommy Hilfiger stages its Spring 2027 show at The Plaza Hotel on September 10, a homecoming to a landmark the designer once called home — three heritage names betting that what they already stand for can be made urgent again.

At the same time, the week is pulling in names from a wider map. Conner Ives makes his New York Fashion Week debut on September 12 after six seasons on the London calendar, while Magda Butrym and Sabyasachi — rooted in Warsaw and Kolkata respectively — also join the schedule. The direction of travel is telling: American fashion is broadening its roster beyond its home market while reviving its own heritage, a two-sided bet on remaining relevant to shoppers who now move freely between geographies and price points.

Structurally, the week is changing too. This is the first New York Fashion Week to run under the CFDA’s fur-free policy, announced in December 2025 and developed with Humane World for Animals and Collective Fashion Justice. The policy bans animal fur across the official schedule and aligns New York with London, Copenhagen, Berlin and other cities that have already gone fur-free. The calendar also honors the 25th anniversary of September 11 with a later start on Friday, a small but telling signal of the season’s more reflective register.

For international readers, the reset has a practical read. The American labels at the center of this week — DVF, Calvin Klein, Tommy Hilfiger — are built on a wearable, cost-per-wear idea of dressing that travels across climates and body types, which is exactly what many shoppers say they want after years of trend overload. If the reboot works, the payoff is not more spectacle but more accessible, long-wear pieces with a clearer point of view — clothes people actually keep and rewear rather than scroll past.

The defining shows arrive early. DVF on September 10 and Calvin Klein on September 11 will set the tone for how convincing the reboot really is. Watch whether Zankov’s DVF lands as a revival of the house’s 1970s wrap-dress ease or a genuinely new language, and whether the fur-free policy changes what designers put on the runway rather than only what they say off it.

The real story of New York’s Spring/Summer 2027 season is not any single show. It is that the city is betting its future on restarts, returns and a cleaner set of rules — a very different pitch from the chase-the-new default that fashion usually lives on.
